Hi everyone,

Well now that school years are coming to an end, and the playoffs for softball and baseball will be winding up; it’s time for travel ball to start heating up…. literally. I don’t know about the rest of you, but where I live, in the land of the burning hills; it gets hot! And now if you haven’t already, you need to make sure your kids….and yourselves…. are hydrated.

Dehydration is a killer. It can sneak up on you fast if you don’t pay attention and stay ahead of it in the summer heat. The old saying was to drink 10 glasses of water a day. Pshhhh. There are others that use math that says things like drink twice your age in ounces + 50 ounces. That can be a good start, but timing is also key. For instance, if you have a game on Saturday afternoon, you will want to make sure you are drinking water on Thursday to give your body time to absorb it well and get your muscle tissues and organs hydrated and oxygenated. Look, I am an EMT, but I don’t want to get all clinical with you. Drink water early and often. And make sure you eat protein, because that is what allows the water to be absorbed into your system.

When you’re out in the heat, watch for signs of heat exhaustion. Profuse sweating, perhaps mood swings (quick to anger), dizziness, confusion. All are signs that you or your kiddo needs to get out of the sun and cooled off. Remember, it can happen fast, especially with kids who are too busy playing and not aware.

So, go out, have fun, and make memories. And be SAFE! And for anything you need this summer, go to my website at lelsports.com. We’ll take care of you! PLAY BALL!
